How Long Does a Brow Tint Last: A Quick Guide on How to Maintain Your Gorgeous Brows
What is eyebrow tinting, and how long does a brow tint last? Eyebrow tinting is a treatment in which you dye your eyebrows like you would your hair. Based on how quickly your hair grows, it can last three to six weeks.
But, much like dyed hair, eyebrow tints require some work to maintain, and they will only last for a while if they’re well taken care of. So, is eyebrow tinting worth it? Read on to find out what it can do for you and your eyebrows!
What Does Eyebrow Tinting Do?
Like our hair color, our brows are our unique shade—and while we’re all about embracing our beauty, we also love finding small ways to improve our looks and express ourselves. You might love your natural brows but might not always want to keep them that way.
Whether you’re switching things up to match a new hairstyle or think there’s a better fit for your skin tone, there are a few ways to enhance or change your natural brow shade. Brow products are a must in our makeup kits for a quick touch-up, but if you frequently shade your brows, you can exchange brow powders and pencils for a solution that lasts longer: brow tinting.
Brow tints are an excellent way to make your eyebrows pop! Not only can they give your brows the perfect color, but they can also make them look fuller and thicker. You can even complement your tinted brows with treatments like waxing or threading to get the perfect eyebrows you’ve always wanted.
Eyebrow tinting can also be a great alternative for people with little time to work with eyebrow pencils and gels. Plus, with the right technician, tinted brows can look much more natural than drawn-on eyebrows.
How Does Eyebrow Tinting Work?
Unsurprisingly, it’s similar to dyeing hair. At the start of your treatment, your technician will apply base cream or petroleum jelly to the skin around your eyebrows to keep the dye from staining. A semi-permanent dye will then be brushed onto your brows and left on for 5-15 minutes, depending on how thick your eyebrows are and how dark you want the tints to be.
Once that’s done, the technician will wipe the excess dye off with a wet cotton pad, and voila- you’ve officially got tinted eyebrows!
How Long Does a Brow Tint Last?
So, how long does a brow tint last? It takes about three to six weeks, but some factors can degrade the tint faster than usual.
For one, thinner eyebrows won’t be able to hold the tint for as long as thicker eyebrows. Sun exposure can also make the tint fade away faster as UV rays break up the chemical bonds that produce the tint’s color. You can also accidentally wash the color out of your brows if you sweat or wash your face a lot.
How To Make Your Eyebrow Tints Last Longer
Get Your Eyebrows Professionally Tinted At A Salon
Technically, you can tint your brows at your home with DIY kits, but having a professional do it for you is much safer. Professional technicians know how to make tints last for as long as possible, and they know which kinds of dye will work best with your skin.
Pick Darker Shades
Pick a tint much darker than your natural eyebrow color because darker tints tend to last longer by default.
Avoid Washing Your Face For A Few Days
Much like with hair dyes, the color from your eyebrow tints will completely set a couple of days after the treatment, so avoid having water on your brows for a little while. You should also avoid working out for the next few days because sweat can wash out the color of your eyebrows.
Minimise Your Time Under The Sun
The sun’s UV rays make colours fade, so try to spend as little time in the sun as possible. If you have to be out and about, consider wearing a hat that can protect your eyebrows from the sun.
Keep Your Eyebrows Healthy
Healthy eyebrows don’t just look better – they also hold on to tints better. Protect your eyebrows with a bit of castor oil, and avoid using facial products with alcohol in them.
Should I Get My Eyebrows Tinted?
Eyebrow tints can give you the thick and sultry brows you’ve always wanted. They can take some work to maintain, but they’re a great way to make your eyebrows pop!
Benefits of Eyebrow Dyeing
Eyebrow tinting is the holy grail for blondes, whose eyebrows are often very bright, indistinct, and invisible. Brow dye highlights even the smallest hairs, making the eyebrows look optically denser and more expressive.
Because it lasts longer, there’s no need to tweak your eyebrows daily. This way, you’ll keep extra precious minutes in the morning. It provides a lasting effect, sparing you the effort of daily adjustments.
You’ll love the long-lasting impact in summer, while on vacation, by the pool/sea, or during sports. Almost all eyebrow dyes resist smudging and are waterproof. This ensures you appear fantastic in any situation, freeing you from concerns about smudged eyebrows.
What to Expect During the Treatment
Now to the process. Before getting started, your artist will consult to review your desired color and overall look. Once a color is decided, your artist will mix and oxidize the pigment. The oxidizing agent used is typically hydrogen peroxide-based. It takes a few minutes for the tint to develop before placing it on your brows. During this time, your artist will clean your brows to make them free of any products or makeup.
Once clean and the tint is developed, your artist will begin painting the tint onto your brows within the eyebrow shape lines. The color will be left on your brows for a few minutes for absorption and further development. After a few minutes have passed, your artist will begin cleaning the tint off your eyebrows with cotton rounds and saline.
Depending on heat, color can continue to oxidize throughout the day but typically willfully oxidize in 15 minutes. It’s important to note that gray and white hairs might not always take the tint as the molecular makeup of those hairs is usually different than standard hairs.
Can I Tint My Eyebrows at Home?
We don’t like telling people what to do, but we don’t like seeing people putting themselves in danger, either. Eyebrow tinting should be left up to the professionals. You might find a few YouTube videos and WikiHow tutorials, but honestly, your eyebrows are too close to your eyes for you to be messing around with them on your own.
Your best bet is to go to someone with extensive training and experience. You can either go to a hair colorist or an eyebrow technician. Still, a brow technician is best as they’ll use dyes specifically for eyebrows (whereas hair colorists may use dyes designed for head hair).
